How many miles are currently on your Jeep model? Fly-fishing guide Jerry Burton boasts around 415k miles on his, thanks to some preventative maintenance and a lot of love. Jerry has been using his vehicle to travel country roads and stream crossings since the year 2000, and it's still running smoothly.

Jerry wasn't always a Jeep fan. Back in 2000, he had a different SUV that was undergoing some steady transmission problems, and he borrowed his friend's Cherokee. Once Jerry realized how great the Jeep was off-road, he hasn't turned back since. He now owns a 2010 Jeep Commander in addition to his 2000 Jeep Cherokee.

If you're wondering how much maintenance goes into a high-mileage vehicle like Jerry's, the answer is: not as much as you may think. Most of the work Jerry has done is preemptive. He explains, "Since the day I purchased my Cherokee I did all the basic maintenance like changing the oil and oil filter, replacing the air filter and greasing it. . . . I replaced the windshield four times, the alternator three times and the starter once and the fuel pump once.  When the automatic transmission started to slip at about 350,000 miles, I had it rebuilt.  I never replaced the AC compressor or any of the hoses."1
