The 2020 Jeep Compass is a compact SUV that’s suitable for those with an active lifestyle. With the lowest starting MSRP in the entire Jeep lineup, it’s also the cheapest path to receiving the coveted “Jeep wave” from other enthusiasts you encounter on the road. If that’s somehow not enough incentive, then perhaps an overlook of its unique trims will help determine if the Jeep Compass is a subcompact crossover capable of fulfilling your need for adventure.
2020 Jeep Compass Sport vs. Latitude
The Sport is the standard base model in the 2020 Jeep Compass lineup. Starting at $23,775 after destination, the Compass Sport is an excellent budget conscious option with an assortment of standard features. All Compass models have seating for five passengers, but also feature split folding 60/40 rear seats that easily move out of the way when more space is needed. With almost 60 cubic feet of maximum interior cargo volume with the rear seats folded down, the Compass provides ample storage capacity for your camping gear on weekend excursions.
A 2.4L four-cylinder engine rated at 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque powers all Compass models including the Sport. It’s available in both front-wheel drive and 4x4 configurations, and is equipped with a standard six-speed manual transmission. An available six-speed automatic transmission is offered for $1500 extra (standard on Latitude FWD).
Though the increased capability of 4x4 is tempting and often necessary in some climates, it’s worth noting that FWD Compass models provide unmatched efficiency and deliver a best-in-class 32 mpg highway.
Cosmetically, the Latitude also provides a higher level of customization than the Sport. An available two-tone paint scheme offers eight unique colors—each with a sleek and stylish black painted roof. Compared to the Sport’s two available 16” wheel options, the Latitude’s standard 17” attire and available 18” five-spokes provide additional visual flair.
The Latitude also adds an 8-way power driver’s seat, premium cloth and vinyl seating, and an available full sunroof and premium Alpine sound system not available on the Sport. The Compass Latitude MSRP starts at $27,120 after destination.
2020 Jeep Compass Limited vs. Trailhawk
The 2020 Jeep Compass Limited is for those who prefer to seek adventure lavishly. Leather trimmed seats are included standard, and available 19-inch diamond cut wheels look absolutely striking when paired with any of the Limited’s 10 two-tone paint schemes.
A $695 “Premium Lighting Group” option adds HID headlights and LED tail lamps for greater visibility. Other notable safety features on the Latitude include adaptive cruise control, advanced brake assist, lane departure warning, and blind-spot and cross-path detection if appropriately optioned.
Inside, an 8.4-inch touchscreen and standard UConnect provide Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Built-in navigation can be added for an additional $1245. And if more frills are needed, the Latitude’s leather seats can be upgraded with the “Luxury Seat Group” option that adds memory and ventilation function for $595 extra. In FWD form, the Latitude starts at $30,125 and $31,625 for 4x4 models.
As its name suggests, the Trailhawk is the most off-road capable model in the Compass lineup and the only one featuring standard four-wheel drive. Starting at $31,345 after destination, the Trailhawk provides an incredible value and segue into the increasingly popular off-road CUV segment.
Black machined-face 17” wheels and 215/65/17 BSW all-season tires deliver the rugged appearance and off-road traction that this 4x4 Jeep requires. Unlike the Aisin six-speed automatic used in FWD models, 4x4 configurations utilize a 9-speed unit with a 3.73 final drive ratio.
Jeep’s renowned Selec-Terrain traction management system is standard on the Trailhawk to deliver optimum performance in four driving modes—auto, snow, sport and sand/mud. In addition, an Active Drive Low 4x4 System is also fitted that provides a 20:1 crawl ratio and low range for unmatched trail capability.
Available premium leather seats with red stitching and “Trailhawk” embroidered logos are offered for $1795. They certainly deliver a statement to all passengers entering the vehicle—the Trailhawk is certainly no ordinary Jeep.
