The 2020 Jeep Renegade might be the diminutive member of the Jeep family, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less capable than its larger siblings—especially off-road. Among subcompact crossovers and other small SUVs in its segment, the Renegade is regarded as the premier choice for drivers who often find themselves wandering the road less traveled.
Unmatched Flexibility and Efficiency
The Renegade provides a ton of flexibility for buyers and can be optioned to meet the demands of an efficient city-commuter or a dirt-road weekend warrior. If you don’t need to tap into the Renegade’s available off-road capabilities, FWD is available on seven of the Renegade’s 10 trim levels—the North Edition, Upland and Trailhawk being the lone exceptions.
In FWD configuration, the Renegade achieves an excellent 32-mpg highway fuel economy rating—a 3-mpg advantage over 4x4 models. This rating is achieved with the Renegade’s available 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 177 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. This engine utilizes direct injection and start/stop technology to provide maximum efficiency. A naturally aspirated 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder is also available rated at 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
Renegade Trailhawk: Jeep’s Smallest Trail Rated SUV
Of course, if you want to experience the very best of what the Renegade has to offer, four-wheel drive is certainly suggested. In Trailhawk guise, the Renegade transforms into a baby mountain goat on rugged terrain—delivering off-road thrills and performance not normally achievable in a CUV this size.
The Trailhawk inspires confidence off-road thanks to its Selec-Terrain management system with snow, sand, mud and exclusive rock modes. With the twist of a knob, drivers can select between each of these modes to optimize the Renegade’s engine and drivetrain systems to deliver optimum traction on slippery and unpredictable driving surfaces. It also features Hill Descent Control, which monitors throttle input, speed and can even automatically apply the brakes to help drivers safely maneuver down steep terrain.
The Renegade is available with two all-wheel drive systems—Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low. Either will perform admirably in most situations and deliver excellent performance off-road. But for those that intend to push the Renegade to its limits, the Active Drive Low system delivers smoother throttle response in first gear with its 21:1 crawl ratio. This added control is especially important when going over obstacles at slow speeds.
The Renegade Trailhawk has also earned Jeep’s prestigious “Trail Rated” badge, which means it has passed a series of grueling challenges that test the vehicle’s traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation and ground clearance.
4x4 Renegade Pricing and Trim Levels
The 2020 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk starts at $29,465 after destination—a substantial increase over the base FWD Renegade’s $23,870 starting MSRP. However, when you look at its host of exclusive off-road equipment like Active Drive Low 4x4, Selec-Terrain “Rock” mode and standard 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it certainly provides excellent value.
Less capable trims like the Renegade North Edition will also get the job done at a lower price with its 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder engine and standard Jeep Active Drive 4x4 system. The North Edition is a great choice for drivers who live or often travel to areas with a harsh winter climate. It comes standard with all-weather floor mats, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and tow hooks that are ready to rescue less capable CUVs stuck in the snow. The 2020 Renegade North Edition starts at $28,265 and looks excellent finished in Alpine White.
